Line of David gave his trainer, John Sadler, another serious contender for next month's Kentucky Derby when he set a strong pace and then held on for a neck win over Super Saver in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby on Saturday. It was another neck back in third to Dublin. Line of David ($36.60) quickly moved to the lead at the start of the mile and an eighth race, and was up by three lengths through an opening quarter in 22.65 seconds. Super Saver tracked in second, as the leader continued to put up strong fractions of 46.26 for the half-mile, 1:10.75 for six furlongs and 1:36.52 for the mile. Line of David then fended off the stretch bids of Super Saver and Dublin to win the photo on a fast track in 1:49.37. www.drf.com |

Sidney's Candy is bound for the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1 after scoring an impressive win in Saturday's $750000 Santa Anita Derby. Sidney's Candy won his third consecutive stakes in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby, pulling away in the stretch to win by 4 1/2 lengths over 12-1 Setsuko. Lookin At Lucky, the 4-5 favorite, could only finish third after encountering trouble on the turn, and was six lengths behind Sidney's Candy. Overlooked Ice Box, the less fancied of two runners trained by Nick Zito for owner Robert LaPenta, ground out a nose victory at odds of 20-1 over another outsider, 29-1 Pleasant Prince, in the $750000 Florida Derby (gr. I)March 20 at Gulfstream Park. Rule, the 9-5 choice in the field of 11, led through most of the stretch but could not hold on, finishing third. Ridden by Jose Lezcano, Ice Box rebounded from a fifth-place finish in the Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (gr. II) Feb. 20 when he was 12 lengths behind Eskendereya, who skipped the Florida Derby in favor of Aqueduct's Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I) April 3. 2010 Tampa Bay Derby – Odysseus

At the quarter pole, Odysseus appeared to have no chance to win Saturday's $300000 Tampa Bay Derby. Even at the wire, it looked like his frantic final surge had fallen short of catching Schoolyard Dreams. But the photo finish camera indicated otherwise with Odysseus eeking out a nose victory. Odysseus, a son of Malibu Moon owned by Satish Sanan's Padua Stable and trained by Thomas Albertrani, prompted the pace of the 3-2 favorite Super Saver for six furlongs before dropping several lengths behind the leaders leaving the quarter pole. But once settling into the stretch under jockey Rajiv Maragh, Odysseus reasserted himself, angled inward to split the leaders inside the sixteenth pole and got his nose down first in the final stride. www.drf.com |
