Snow Update 12/19 7pm

Things are starting to intensify with 2-3 inches on the ground and snow covered roads. Occasional whiteout conditions but still not as bad they said it would be. Its gonna have to get heavier than this and stay heavy for a foot or more. I think Southern New Jersey will be getting much more, with over a foot on the ground and still snowing. We really have yet to get into the really heavy stuff with the dry air getting in and supressing the heavy snow amounts. As you can see from this video of ... |

Ferry rides from Sayville to The Pines, and Ocean Beach to Bay Shore

There are 3 ferry companies that serve Fire Island. The largest is Fire Island Ferries out of Bay Shore. They serve Kismet, Saltaire, Fair Harbor, Atlantique, Ocean Beach, Seaview, and Ocean Bay Park. They recently raised the fare to $9 each way. They have a large fleet of boats, however most of them appear to be older, 2-stroke powered. They have a few new ones, one of which I ride back from Ocean Beach. The new ones seem to be mainly on Ocean Beach runs, and Saltaire and Kismet get the older boats. The other major company that serves Fire Island is Sayville Ferry Service. They have boats to Cherry Grove, Fire Island Pines, and Sailors Haven/Sunken Forest. They have mostly newer boats, powered by 4 stroke engines, however they may use an older, smaller boat for Sailors Haven runs. Fare is $7.25 one way, except $6.50 one way for Sailors Haven. I took this ferry going to Fire Island Pines, it was a nice ride with a 4 stroke engine. The other company operates out of Patchogue and is called Davis Park ferry company. They have all older 2 stroke powered boats and they are LOUD. I took one last year to Watch Hill and it was quite an unpleasant ride! They serve Watch Hill and Davis Park, fare is $8.50 one way. Anyway back to the boat I took back in this video. Her name is Fire Island Belle and she was built in 2008, I think. Compared to the Voyager she is much quieter. Cablevision…Optimum Headaches!

*NOTE...I NO LONGER HAVE CABLEVISION AND SWITCHED TO FIOS AND DONT MISS THESE TROUBLES!* I have been having outages at night every other day recently, setting my neighbors alarm off and waking me up (alot of ppl here have their alarms hooked up to Opt.Voice). The service is complete and utter garbage. I had pixelation problems and slow internet, now I have outages. And now my Optimum Voice is out on a regular basis and I am missing alot of calls during the day. I called support, they seem to no nothing of the outages, although they are often mentioned on the repair line message. Cablevision sucks period, Fios TV and internet and phone is much better, I wouldn't be in this mess if my stupid town would approve the Fios contract. I'm so steamed I think I'm gonna re-upload some of my old Cablevision rant videos. People need to see how bad this service is...stay away...get Fios and dont move to a town that doesn't have it. UPDATE: tried another phone a friend lent me and it seems to be working OK for now. However how did my phone get damaged? Probably from Cablevision since its plugged into a power surge protector. Of course I wont be able to get reimbursement from that damage and will have to buy a new phone. |

A Fire Island journey:Lighthouse to the pines….

A slideshow of the towns and natural environments on the barrier island of Fire Island. Here you will find beautiful ocean beaches, back dunes, and even pine barrens. The pines here are stunted...similar to that of the dwarf pine plains...but their cones are not always seritinous, but they have an above average number of them. In this slideshow we tour the island, from the lighthouse area through the Sunken Forest and ending at Fire Island Pines. |
