BYU Basketball 2009-2010: UNLV Rebels

Posted by: TheLatterdaySaints | Comments Comments Off
With star Jimmer Fredette struggling with illness, the #23 BYU men's basketball team opened conference play with an exciting 77-73 win over the UNLV Rebels in the Marriott Center on Wednesday night. BYU was led by Noah Hartsock and Jonathan Tavernari with 17 points each. BYU led 33-30 at halftime but UNLV opened the second half with a scoring frenzy to lead 45-40 and force a BYU timeout. BYU fought hard to stay in the game, but hot shooting by UNLV had the Rebels control most of the second half. Some key UNLV turnovers, combined with huge offensive plays by byu's trio of Michael Loyd Jr., Jonathan Tavernari, and Tyler Haws eventually propelled BYU to the come-from-behind victory. BYU is now 15-1 (1-0 in MWC play) and gets ready to renew an old WAC rivalry with UTEP on Saturday in El Paso, Texas.

The BYU Cougars basketball team got revenge from last year's loss at Arizona State, defeating the Sun Devils 81-68 Tuesday night in the Marriott Center. Freshman Tyler Haws had a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jackson Emery continued to be a spark nailing 5 three-pointers and also finishing with 17 points. Jimmer Fredette scored 10 points, while hitting his 33rd straight free-throw to pass Michael Smith's record for consecutive free-throws of 32 set in 1989. BYU went into halftime with a 16 point lead and even led by as much as 20 points, but a furious rally by Arizona State cut the lead to four with five minutes left in the game. Perfect free-throw shooting by Haws, Tavernari, and Fredette sealed the game for the Cougars. BYU improves to 7-1 on the season and gets ready for a Saturday game against ex-Cougar coach Steve Cleveland's Fresno State Bulldogs in the Save Mart Center.

BYU Basketball 2009-2010: Weber State

Jimmer Fredette led BYU with 23 points, Jonathan Tavernari scored 14 points, and Jackson Emery was key to byu's 87-70 win over a pesky Weber State Friday night in the Marriott Center. BYU led by as much as 14 in the first half, but Weber State chipped away to give BYU a tight 38-34 lead heading into halftime. Weber State came back to take a 43-40 lead, but a three-pointer barrage by Jackson Emery and Jimmer Fredette made the game a blow out. BYU is now 5-0 and prepares for an in-state game against the Utah State Aggies Wednesday night in Logan at the Spectrum.
