The New York Knicks have met with Jason Kidd on the first day of NBA free agency. The Dallas point guard and his agent met Wednesday with Knicks president Donnie Walsh and coach Mike D'Antoni at Madison Square Garden.

The Dallas Mavericks opened the free-agent period early Wednesday by letting free-agent guard Jason Kidd know that they are prepared to sign him to a three-year deal, according to sources with knowledge of the negotiations.

Kidd was at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday morning getting the grand tour.

Jason Kidd met for three hours with Knicks officials early Wednesday at Madison Square Garden. Kidd, the veteran free agent point guard, gave Dallas the first crack at talking to him when he met with Mavs owner Mark Cuban just after midnight.
